Daily Reflection

Good Friday
Holy Week
“After this, when Jesus knew that all was now finished, he said (in order to fulfill the scripture), ‘I am thirsty.’ A jar full of sour wine was standing there. So they put a sponge full of the wine on a branch of hyssop and held it to his mouth. When Jesus had received the wine, he said, ‘It is finished.’ Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.”
John 19:28-30

“Giving up his spirit” isn’t a sanitized euphemism for death to make what happens on the cross acceptable for us nice, Christian folks. Jesus gives over, delivers his spirit to the One who breathed life into us all. Jesus yields to God at the moment of his death as he did in life, entrusting to God that which was entrusted to him, knowing that God has done it.

Holy Trinity, we pray in thanksgiving for Jesus, the fulfilled word made flesh, given up for the sake of all. In Jesus it is finished. Amen
