Easter
“All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the LORD; and all the families of the nations shall worship before him. For dominion belongs to the LORD, and he rules over the nations.”
Psalm 22:27-28

The Hebrew scriptures are, from start to finish, a book “from” and “for” the Jewish people. Nevertheless, there is a deeply universalistic ethos that flows through much of the Hebrew scriptures: a vision of—and a hope oriented toward—a future in which the God this people have come to know and to serve and to love will have definitively called all peoples and all nations to know and to serve and to love God. With the good news of Easter, that future erupts amid our world: even here, even now, the considerable evidence to the contrary notwithstanding. All the families! All the nations! In deep, abiding harmony! May it be so!

God of outlandish visions! God whose hopes for us far exceed any of the hopes that occasionally break through the thick walls of our cynicism and despair! We bless You for the boundless reaches of Your mercy, and we pray that You will inspire us to cooperate with the boundary-shattering energies of Your relentless love. Through Christ! Amen
